appliances

the elevator dings between each floor.
i can hear it still, the echoes of a doctor
telling us about a skiing trip that she took.
and then the drip of the IV, sometimes blood,

nothing’s more pathetic

than an empty minivan.
i traded in my car for one today,
before i found out that the woman we thought
would give us her baby, decided not to.
so now there’s an empty minivan outside our house.
an empty crib upstairs.
and i’d be lying if i didn’t say that my heart
feels a bit emptier.

the main reason for dormers

is to bring light
into the attic or upper level of a house.
so maybe it’s strange that we’re planning on covering
up the window in ours.

two januarys ago,
leanne and lydia and i sat in the dormer
and said goodbye to the baby we thought we’d have.
