a word from our sponsors

a lot of people ask about it.
they see me spinning it around and around.
a nervous habit, i suppose.

it was made by a woman down the street
who specializes in making rings that live inside
of other rings, so that the inner one
spins and spins.

i came up with the word.
surprise, surprise.

recently i noticed that i didn’t have any bumperstickers
on my car. and i thought it was an indication that i don’t stand
much for anything.

but then i remembered the ring,
and how i wear it every day,
and read it all the time,
and maybe, hopefully, live it.
why story? people ask.
and i say that it’s a reminder to me
that my life should be something worth
writing about.
that everything i do should be worth writing about
and telling about and listening to.
and then i think about our life since january,
and how it’s been exactly that,
and how i’ve done exactly that,
maybe, truly, for the first time.
and it feels good, even though we didn’t ask for this,
to be able to be true
to one’s word,
to the one word,
story.
——-
if you had a ring and could pick a word,
what would it be and why?

may both noun and adjective define my life

hope…cause it takes that to keep the story going.

No bumper stickers either lol but do wear a irsh ring known as a Claddagh Ring. the meaning is kinda love friendship and loyalty.
Guess its a story teller to… It had a circle made of two hands holding a heart and a crown. If your not married you wear the heart facing out the top of it. If your engaged on the left ring finger heart inward. Then it moves to the left ring finger if your married and heart inward. Its kinda of neat irish tradition.
So it to tells a story of life. Whew quiet a story just thinking about it I got it as a gift from my husband almost 29 yrs ago.
Thanks for making me think of that. And how things tell us or remind us of events and those things.

grbnk…because nothing in life HAS to make sense, but it’s nice if it makes you smile, or even scratch your head as you try to understand it.

Hope.
It’s what gets me up in the morning.

(Laughing at the bumpersticker reply…)
Since that’s most likely too large to put on a ring, I’d have to go with ‘faith.’ It’s something that’s proved elusive to me, something I envy in others, to have a carved-in-stone spiritual base. It’s something I want, though I’m not certain how to get there.
September 14, 2007 at 6:04 am
Does this woman have a website? I would love a ring like that.
And what word would I put in it? CREATE. That’s what makes me feel alive, when I’m creating something. Or maybe TRUTH, because when truth is there the lies disappear and right living occurs. Or maybe FREEDOM.
What a great post. Long time lurker here. What a great blog. What a great story.

you still got it, dan.
some people said you were losing it,
or had lost it completely, but they were wrong.
very wrong.

Hope
ever since we started our process to adopt, ever since my eyes were opened to the great suffering that goes on in this world, ever since i experienced it for myself . . . hope is irrepressible.
“But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.”

grace
a word that encompasses so much of what I strive for, in life, in love
September 14, 2007 at 8:46 am
I’m with Lizzie - my word would be “grace.” To it I owe everything I have, and don’t have, good and bad.
September 14, 2007 at 12:11 pm
My word would be Believe…
That encompasses so very many things for me!
And I must jump on the band wagon with Kathleen… How can WE get one??

September 15, 2007 at 5:52 am
Faith.
And not religious faith, at least not for me. Faith in myself, in the universe, and the vast unknown. And faith that hope, love, and grace will win out in the world and in my heart.
Great story, this one of the rings. I’ll be using the idea for some classroom writing next week. Credit will be given, of course.
Thanks.

I would also like the woman’s website if she has one. I think the word I would put on mine is “prayer.”
September 15, 2007 at 7:28 pm
as far as the rings go, the designer’s name is Kay Conger.
website:
http://www.kaymargaretconger.com/
email:
designsinmetal@aol.com
You can ask her about spinning rings, or non-spinning rings if you want.
You could also ask her about online gambling or even a proper bolognese sauce.
Not sure how small the font would have to be to fit “bumpersticker” on a ring, but carley and kevin got rings from her that say “the light is everything”.
they’re prettier than mine.
September 16, 2007 at 12:38 am
My ring would say “Be.”
September 16, 2007 at 9:27 pm
my word would be Brave…because lately I am low on courage and heavy on obstacles yet I want to be strong and able. I am frightened and need to remind myself that I do have strength to persevere….sorry a bit dreary…
September 17, 2007 at 3:35 pm
for the record, danny, i’m pretty sure it was i who chose STORY for you. as i recall, you were leaning towards PORK, and i pointed out that it may lose its appeal over time.
my ring would say CALM or PATIENCE as good goal reminders….or CHEESE just to make me smile
September 17, 2007 at 8:55 pm
oh, WHATEVER…….
if i remember it correctly, “cheese” isn’t just something that makes you smile, but rather the answer you gave to your potential college roommate when, trying to get to know you, she asked you “so, what do you like?”
September 18, 2007 at 3:02 pm
I have a word ring that says “spirit.” I like to think I take a spirited approach to the world around me.
I probably should have one that says “curious” because I love learning about other people and I ask lots of questions. It’s why I love blogs.
Or maybe I need one that says “voyeur.”
September 19, 2007 at 8:36 am
Cheese is definitely a good one, Lee! I still haven’t come up with ONE GOOD WORD… Lots of ideas, but I haven’t found “it” yet. When I do, I will be sure to let you know and maybe even order a ring. Until then, let me just send you my love…and maybe some cheese doodles, cheezits, cheesy pizza, nacho cheese, or whatever floats your boat. Lots of love — Jen

so how long have you guys been conducting your communications via blog comments? and did you ever consider getting two rings, one with “pork” and one with “cheese,” and maybe even one with “white bread”?
i’ll take my answer off the air.

Imagine.
Because I love that word and all of its meanings.

Mine would have to be control.
I would wear it to remind me that it’s o.k. if things are not always in my control.

L.O.V.E. - love is all there is.
I am recovering from a very bad bike fall. Face plant onto the pavement. Unseen broken storm drain + 15 mph on bike = broken teeth, broken rib, severe concusion. Helmet properly positioned on head = life.
But much to my surprise, as God always seems to have it, my (beautiful) ex-BF’s face is the first thing I remember seeing after regaining my awareness in the ER 1 1/2 hours after my fall as they stitched up my shattered mouth…”Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall…”
So much love; so many towels thrown in due to overactive egos and old wounds. New wounds to replace old ones; new love to give and receive.
My mother coming out from MA to tend to me. My 16 & 20 year old children bickering over silling things like who would get me a cold pack for my neck…friends calling non-stop. Flowers fowers flowers. An old pal who now lives in ME sending me an email out of the blue “Heard you were in a motorcycle accident!” Not quite right, but more evidence that the game of telephone works…and that I am loved.
L.O.V.E. is all there is.

If it’d fit, I think I’d have to go with:
Why Are You Looking At Me?
September 30, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Sorry. I forgot that the original question asked for one word. LOVE would definitely be the one word I’d choose.
September 30, 2007 at 4:59 pm
let-it-go, as one word, of course.
if we could just let it go, all the time, then there would be no war. there would be no sadness. because, really, if you can let go whatever is making you sad, angry, jealous, vengeful, then perhaps love, hope, peace, content, kindness, joy…well, perhaps they would all come rushing down on us.

The One Word
I do have a ring – one on each hand.
and can pick a word; just one word
which signifies the purpose of each band
that one word simply being — reminder.
Why? That too is relatively easy to answer.
I have a gold ring on my left ring finger
that reminds me of the promises
I made years ago to my life partner.
To be there and be true to her
in good days as well as in bad
for better or worse – richer or poorer
until that day when death do us part.
The ring on my right ring finger
is adorned with a simple etched cross.
It signifies the promises I made so long ago,
to follow the ways of the master Benedict
the daily dying of oneself
to rise and live more fully and completely
the vows of poverty, chastity, obedience,
conversatio and stability.
Those vows are now found
only in the memories of my past.
Neer wanting to forget the meaning
of those long ago words
I wear these rings on my fingers
symbols that daily serve as my – reminder.
October 3, 2007 at 8:16 pm
My word would be “wow”. I want to always look at the people and world around me in wonder and amazement…the vast beauty. I never want to view life as stale, mundane. There’s too much wonder in life to do that. “Wow” Yep, that’s my word.
Thank you for making me realize this. :)

I have a ring by a Haida artist. It’s silver with an image (in gold) of the mythical raven putting the sun back into the sky. I have too many words that I would want to right. Thank goodness a picture is worth a thousand of ‘em.
I found your blog through Scarlett of Bone Marrow Poptarts and I linked to you today, as part of a series I am doing called “beyond the pink”, highlighting great blogs written by people whose lives have been touched by non pink-ribbon cancers.

OMNA - “Oh man! Not again!!”
October 17, 2007 at 11:13 pm
If I had a ring, my word would be courage. I have it tattooed on my ancle however sometimes when I am trying to find the courage I don’t exactly look at my ankle I am playing with my hands.
I would use it to remind me to forget my anxieties and general demands of life and rememeer to have the courage to live life to it fullest. It would remind me that someone once had the courage to bring me into this world, so now its my time to have the courage to get through each day and each obsticle that is put amongst my path.
thanks for letting me share
