a novel is a life,
a short story a week,
a poem a second.
or at least they can be.
what we try to do
is just approximate,
to just make someone feel
as if they are there.
i try to do it with words,
and fail all the time.
jenna walker does it with photographs
and as far as i can tell, hardly ever fails.
(this post is up on the pix page as well)
the other day, jenna came over.
jenna is a wedding photographer, carley and kevin’s wedding photographer.
it was her idea. to come over, to take pictures.
she wants to do more than weddings.
and she should.
so, she sat with us and walked with us and talked with us and played with us.
she talked and listened with her eyes, her finger on the shutter,
and told our story in a way that i cannot.
here’s a slideshow of many of the pics:
http://www.jennawalkerphotography.com/slideshows/danleannelydia
and here are some individual pics from our time together.
if you’re in need of someone seeing you in this way.
jenna can do it.
we’re not this good looking.
really.
thank you for doing what i could never do,
and what, seemingly, you were meant to do -
fitting a life into a millisecond.

Actually, you are that good looking. You just don’t see it in the mirror. You don’t catch yourselves with those expressions or that angle. She did a wonderful job capturing your images and always present love of one another.

WOW - that’s really all I can say - WOW. True beauty captured.

Jenna did a wonderful job. Those pictures were stunning, tremendously stunning, and captured the strength of your family and the fierce love that flows from each of you.
Loved the pictures. Loved the ‘fuck cancer’ hat.
I just completed a post on my blog, and I’m hoping some people will see it and sponsor your friends. I don’t get that much traffic, but it might get you a bit closer to some bike riding company.
God bless you guys.

Love them. I love the black and white ones. I love the message that the pictures send. They just all scream love, protection, relief and happiness. And you look like Woody Harrelson.

Beautiful.

None of you know me at all, but I read daily and think of you often. The pictures are painfully beautiful.
Dan, the ones of you made me sob. Let us, your readers, stranger and friend alike; carry some of that burden and do some of the praying, so that you can love with with your eyes open. I do not presume to understand your feelings or what you guys are going through, but this stranger would gladly take some of the weight of the world off your shoulders.
You are a beautiful family.

Just gorgeous. So full of love.

For now all I can say is thanks so much for sharing . These photographs are just wonderfully stunning and stark.
They are perfect in my eyes they tell the story exactly how it is just as you have in words.
I have to come back later and post.. Hugs and prayers Hope

If there is ever an award established for “cancer patient with the most radiant smile,” my vote goes to Leanne. You are smiling in nearly every photo (which are extraordinary, it goes without saying). I don’t know what that says, exactly, but my guess is that it is similar to what is written on Dan’s hat? ;)

You are right — words fail. Stunning? Beautiful? Unbelievably moving? Love? Any of those work? Probably not.
Bravo to Jenna for capturing you as you are and bravo to you for letting it all shine through.
Much love to the three of you —
Jen, Fred, Alexi and Julia
P.S. One of my favorites is the black and white of Dan and Leanne’s heads close together and adorable Lydia tilting her head between them.

Jenna does an AMAZING job at capturing feeling, beauty and love all at once. You Weinshenkers may not see or feel it as you move through your days but we do when we visit…you truely are THAT beautiful and the love and emotion you are willing to share and encourage from us is stunning!
March 8, 2007 at 6:27 pm
How I cried watching this slideshow! Jenna has the incredible gift of being able to capture the purest, rawest emotions on camera…just breathtaking. Dan…the one of you kissing Lee’s shoulder, and of the two of you smiling at each other…just made me break down. Love the few of the two of you snuggling Lydia between you. Such a beautiful family. Thank you for sharing these with us. Thoughts and prayers coming your way…

Crying tears of happiness and joy. So lovely, thank you for sharing–your bad news, your good news, your incredible photos…I don’t know you, but I do…
The eyes on that child! Mercy!!

You don’t know me, but I read your blog daily and sobbed though the slide show. You are so beautiful as a family, and as individuals. These are the most incredibly photographs and truely capture who you are. So very very moving. And so very beautiful.

I left earlier to gather my thoughts. I was so moved my the reality of the photographs. Sometimes for me when I hear about the other cancers out there it tears me up cause Lymphoma is not talked about nor is a common thing to hear about. At least not when I was diagnoised.
Thing is I came back early this morning cause it brought back a rush of feelings..that made me think back. Thats okay cause I don’t want to forget where I have been.
Before my husband went off to bed tonight with a rotten cold. I had him watch the slide show. He said, “its stunning but riveting.” He agreed its funny how it creeps back once in a while as a reminder.
I was praying that you had a strong family and knew from what you have written there was a very deep love for leeann. Its in the picture and so much more. I just have to say I am glad you shared cause I feel looking at them you to will be just fine. I don’t know why I only know that love that deep from my own experience, can bring us through anything. Hang tightly to it..Hugs and Prayers Hope

Wow. Those are beautiful. You are beautiful.
March 9, 2007 at 6:07 am
Wow, I dont know what else to say, but Wow. How amazingly moving, beautiful and profound.
The slideshow tells your amazing story of love, life and the battle that you are fighting and winning. The expressions are incredible. Wow.
I love, love, love the pic of you and Leanne with “FUCK CANCER” hat. The expression on your face says it all.

Oh. My.
You are the beautiful family that I imagined!
That slide show was stunning … absolutely stunning … it made my heart hurt for you so bad.
I’m not sure how I ever found this link, but I am thankful that I did. This cancer journey sucks hugely … my son, who was just 4 at the time, was diagnosed with leukemia just over 3 YEARS ago, and now finally, we see the end of the tunnel. In less than 3 months, he’ll finally be in the NO CHEMO zone! I remember then thinking … how can my little 4 year old do this … he’ll be 7 when it’s all said and done … a little less than half his life on chemo. WOW!
I’m behind you all.

Those are beautiful photographs.
You don’t know me, but I came across this blog about the same time as a good friend of mine lost her battle to breast cancer. Your story has really moved me, and I know that it is a fight you will win. I am sending you all positive thoughts.
Good luck with your bike race for Team in Training. I ran the Chicago marathon with them, and it was a great experience. Having just moved back to the USA, I will sign up for a new event soon - they are a wonderful organization.
All the best,
Caroline in Brooklyn

Amazing. Beautiful. Wonderful.
March 10, 2007 at 7:11 am
Yeah….I thought I was a hot lymphoma patient. Sigh.
I mean, don’t get me wrong — I’m all kinds of eye candy, but I think you guys have me beat.
Hey — do you guys have to do intrathecal chemo?
March 10, 2007 at 9:36 am

I’ve been reading your blog since the beginning - chronic lurker. I’ve been praying for your family, as many others have done as well. I’m so happy for the good results you’ve had this week!
The photographs are simply stunning. You are a beautiful family… the love you share is vibrant and unmistakable. I LOVE the hat Dan… I had eyes full of tears at the sheer beauty of your family but that one sent me over the edge! Thank you for sharing them.
Many prayers,

i finally got the chance to watch the slideshow…wow.
you already know how amazing the photos are, so i’ll just add:
oh my god, lydia’s room may be the cutest little kid room i have ever seen.
there’s a piano in there?
fantastic.
also, my favorite pics were the ones of leanne and lydia on the fuzzy looking floor in there. especially the one where we can see you at the piano in the background.
thanks so much for sharing.

I am touched by these photos. I live in CS and have sent an email to your photographer about her services. What a wonderful wonderful gift. Beautiful.
March 11, 2007 at 11:55 pm
The love the three of you share is more powerful than anything…in particular, cancer. Cried, I sat here and cried because yes, the photos are beautiful. But more than that the photos and your story have renewed me. Every night of my life I pray for my life to be long and healthy life so that I may raise my abused, special (adopted) sons and that they may not suffer another loss in their childhood. And my prayers always include Leanne.
In your strength I seem to have found mine, renewed and well. Thank you beautiful family.

Beautiful photographs of an amazing family. God Bless and keep up the fight.
Blessings,
